Lanterns of Love Reflection: Group members were Oliver Scott and Diego Diaz. Our group work very well together and based what we worked on, by each others strengths in that area. We had different areas of strengths for example adobe illustrator, building and planning interviews. In terms of collaboration we worked together to finish everything and were able to display everything during exhibition. We collaborated very well overall, but sometimes had some disagreements with building and agreeing on ideas. Some areas I can grow as a group member is to make sure to include others with the planning because I took a major role in completing the interview planning. So a goal is to make sure others contribute in some small way even if they aren’t strong in that area. Because our group did our work by what we are actually good at doing.
In Humanities I learned how to conduct an interview with a stranger and be able to keep it going for at least an hour. We conducted these interview and learned the basics norms through a interview. When interviewing different age groups you have to adjust the question either by its complex words or another topic. From reading Romeo and Juliet we learned about two teenagers that were in a relationship, but was forced to be torn apart from each other. Because both families were in a war against each other (Montagues, Capulets) it made it very difficult for the couple to see each other. Their immaturity eventually get to them and they both commit suicide. From my perspective I believed that Romeo and Juliet's love was infatuated. Throughout our interview with our Senior Citizen and Adult I learned that they didn’t believe love at first sight. Because if you fall in love with someone at first sight you are attracted to their physical appearance. I learned that being in love takes commitment, patience, determination and truthfulness to make a lasting relationship. With our art pieces we designed it based of the adult we interviewed. Through anthropology we talked about the history of physical beauty and compared it to now day. We also learned about arranged marriages through the different cultures. I used Humanities thinking throughout the project through interviews and and creating our art pieces based on those interviews.
In Physics we learned the concept of power circuits and how they work. We also learned about direct circuit and alternating current. Series circuits are lined up along one path. If the circuit is broken, all components turn off. Compared to parallel circuits where if one bulb is taken out it still works. We run parallel circuits throughout the house. We also learned about insulators, conductors and about resistance. We learned how to solve equations in math with given power, current, voltage and the resistance. We used physics thinking when making a circuit that lights up a build. This then would go into out lantern and shine light though.
In Engineering we used adobe illustrator to create our lantern box for the Senior Citizens. After we created it we wood glued it together and create small pieces that made the box easy to access the inside. We used the bandsaw to create a handle and little triangle pieces on all four sides that held the lid up. This allows you to turn the light on and off. We also created are adult piece in engineering and learn how to use the scroll saw to get precise cuts. We also you the wood burner to create detail in our wood artwork. In engineering we executed what we learned in Physics about circuits and learned how to put them together. Engineering was a big part of this project because everything we displayed, was made in makerspace/engineering.
During Exhibition we were able to display our work to different people that we interviewed and parents. It interesting and nice to see the Senior Citizen enjoy the performances and lanterns that we created for them. Then at the Charity Arts & Crafts studio we showed our work to the community and parents. I talked to couples that were interviewed and they really seemed to like the final products. My group created a lantern that had each side representing a world map, a couple, geometry creation and quote. For our adult piece we created a language and a world map that was wood burned onto it. Lastly, with our 3rd grader we collaborated and drew a picture of what we loved. What I had to offer to my group is my ability to be prepared and having good work ethic. Being prepared and making sure everything was planned out was something really important that you need during an interview. Without this the interview will be unplanned and it would be unprofessional to go all over the place. In terms of work ethic, I was able to stay on track throughout the work times and do something that would benefit my group. I was able to get a lot of work done in terms of preparing and finish worksheets. My collaboration with my group worked out very well. We all contributed in some way and helped one another. We accomplished tasks by our strengths and this actually worked out. Cause by doing this that task or product would turn out really well because we each individually had experience with doing that. Oral communication worked out during our interview with the three different age groups. I feel like I was able to explain the project very thorley and ask questions that helped get deep and detailed information. My understanding through this project was very deep. I was able to follow the concept of love by learning through the interview. I was able to get involved with the Anthropology lessons and about the articles we read. My written communication was probably my strongest skill throughout this project. Through this project I really focused on the interviews and planning. Along with the emails we sent out and the artist statement. This was a strength because I put a lot of detail and time in this area. A skill I could grow on would be oral communication because sometimes I would stand back with asking questions during the interview. This project was an interesting project we got to understand different views of love. We got to visit senior citizens from interviewing third graders. Overall the project was another success.
