Decades Reflection: Something that I learned about New York in the 1990s that I didn't know before this project was the they have many notable locations in the city. Some include Central Park, Statue of Liberty, World Trade Center, Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square etc. They have a very accomplished sports history during this era as well. The 1990 New York Giants season was one of the most successful seasons in the professional football franchise's history. They won their sixth championship and second Super Bowl. The 90s Giants were noted as one of the greatest defense of teams in NFL history. The Knicks were playing their best in franchise history during the 1990s. The playoff-level Knicks were led by Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing. The New York Knicks made it to the championship both in 1994 and 1999. The 1996 season saw the rise of three Yankees who would form the core of the team for years to come. On January 1, Rudolph Giuliani was sworn in as the 107th Mayor of New York City. He reduced crime and reinvent the Times Square area as a family-friendly tourist destination.
In the 1990s, technology versus today is extremely different. During this era we were first exposed to technology and was experimenting with it. Listening to music in the 90s was all about rocking your Discman or a Walkman with cassette tapes recorded off the radio. Compared to our generation using our smartphones and Mp3 players etc. AIM was the popular communication tool in the 90s, compared to us talking through social media as well as smartphones. To list a few more differences, watching television, playing video games and surfing the web has revolutionized in today's era. But overall the greatest impact the internet has had on our generation is the way people live, work and operate with it. The internet has only made improvements from the 90s and it has changed by being constantly upgraded.
The artifact that our group produced that was my favorite was the Smithsonian Hit The Road. I believe that this artifact was able to enhance and display our decade and city clearly. Compared to other options were it was difficult to get the main points and facts across. This option was a creative way, but also could capture what New York in the 90s was like. Also, how we displayed it and created it really made it much better.
The aspect that I learned the most throughout this project was the Economic and Political background. Some important statistics about the economics was the economy was growing, with annual growth rates of 8.3% in 1998, 3.5% in 1999.The employment rate increased by 5% during the 1990’s. Also By 1998 the welfare roll call had been reduced by more the 600,000 from 1995, a 35% decrease. For political, the internet was born during this decade, marking a significant time in history. For fashion, anything loose fitting and colorful worked. The 90s saw the rise of some of the best bands and artist of all time. Sports began to come on the rise up with basketball, soccer and baseball legends in this era.If I could choose one thing to change about this project would be to eliminate one aspect of the project, by either eliminating the CYOA story, book or artifact. Because of the time to complete each thing was not easy by eliminating one of those it would be less stressful and allow us to make our other assignments more complete.
The book my group and I read was Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.
Synopsis:Fight Club is about an unnamed Narrator who struggles with insomnia, a condition where you are unable to fall and stay asleep. So the Narrator joins a cancer support group, even though he does not have cancer . The support group helps him to express strong emotion and sleep well. There he meets Marla Singer, who also does not have cancer, her reasons for going is to feel “close to death.” The Narrator goes on vacations and then meets Tyler Durden, after spending time together Tyler and the Narrator the realize that they love fighting because it makes them feel alive. They then open a fight up a Fight Club. The men in Fight Club are sick of being treated as second-class citizens. They want a fighting chance at success. They want health care. They want to not be treated like slaves. They want to be defined by something other than their job title and their bank account. And they've realized that none of this will ever happen. This frustration and helplessness still exists today. This was something that was going on in the 1990s and this book takes place in New York.
